Killing the Web Redirect for Commenting

    Status: Completed.

This project is considered completed when we enabled signing comments on any Hypermedia web site. Now instead of going via the redirect flow to hyper.media users are able to create a key right on the web site they are looking at, and sign their comments with that key. Linking this key to your desktop app and/or other keys you might have will be covered by a separate project.

    Problem

The current flow of web commenting is quite a UX disaster — the redirect is confusing and breaks the user out of their reading context completely. People don't understand it, and it was never meant to stay for long anyway.

    Solution

Enable web commenting on all the sites. Just like in the old days — you go to a web site, you leave a comment, registering if necessary. In our case the registration is done with the Web Crypto key pairs.

If you want to use your identity from multiple devices, or you want to not lose the identity in any way you need to link it, for which there're 2 options for now:

        Link with the desktop app.

Link with hyper.media which is itself expected to be linked with the desktop app.

At some point we can explore more options like downloading an encrypted recovery phrase file, using passkeys, etc.

      UX Flow

We present the Create Account modal like we currently do on hyper.media — when you want to post a comment for the first time.

In this modal you have the option to create a new account, or sign in with desktop app or hyper.media.

If you create a new account, we'll show a toast prompting you to link the account if you don't want to lose it. The toast can be dismissed with: "Remind me later" or "Never remind me again" options.
