Project: Implementing the Summary Field in Documents

    Objective

Add a Summary field in the Draft Options panel of the document editor in Seed Hypermedia. This brief text will appear below the headline on site homepages, helping readers decide whether to open the full article.

    Why It Matters

      Improves the homepage reading experience.

Aligns with editorial standards (used by The New York Times and others).

Helps writers and editors clearly communicate the article’s value.

Team consensus: the word Summary is the preferred term (as advocated by @horacio@seedhypermedia.com).

    Technical Tasks

      UI Implementation

Location in UI: Right-hand sidebar of the Draft Editor.

        Component:

          Field name: Summary

Type: Textarea (recommended max: 300 characters)

Placement: Below “Cover Image,” above “Show Outline” in the Document Options section.

      Protocol Schema Update

Add a new top-level optional attribute to the document schema:

          summary: string

This attribute must be part of the signed CRDT document format and follow existing change tracking mechanisms.

      Rendering Logic

Homepage: Display the summary under the title in article previews.

Search & Listings: Display the summary where applicable (if present).

Fallback: If no summary is set, leave empty — no autogeneration for now.
