Discussions Panel Is Confusing

I've experienced something very weird with the discussions panel. Very often I wish we simply display the whole tree of comments as they are, simply allowing to collapse subtrees.

I'm not sure if what I'm about to describe is an expected behavior or not.

    Here's what I see:

    Here's what I'm confused about:

Notice how the first comment shows "Reply (8)", while only 3 replies are visible.

I understand that probably there has been a few concurrent replies to the first comment, so it has several sibling children. But then why I still see 3 replies below? Which replies are chosen to be shown vs. being hidden under the "Reply" button?

When I press on "Reply (8)" button I still only see 3 comments there:

The last comment by Horacio shows "Reply (2)" but there're no replies below at all.

But when I click on it I see this:

So Horacio's comment has 2 "chains" of replies, but they are 5 comments in total. And I guess these are the 5 comments which added to the 3 replies to Eric's original comment sum up to Eric's "Reply (8)" button.

    Questions:

Why on Eric's comment we show the cumulative number of replies, while on Horacio's comment we only show the number of "direct" replies?

Why when I click on Eric's comment, I don't see the 5 replies to Horacio's comment? This is the most confusing part. The number says 8, but there's no way to see those 8 comments.

Don't we really want a way to see the entire thread on one screen? The current experience requires to do so many clicks, for seemingly no benefit. I really wish there was a simple way to see the whole thread. Just like on HackerNews, YouTube, Instagram, and most other places.
